William J. McLaughlin, 81, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Delaware. He was born on January 31, 1945, and raised in Rockaway Beach, New York.

During the last three years of his life, Bill fought a courageous battle with multiple health issues. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Laurena McLaughlin; his parents, William and Virginia McLaughlin; his brother-in-law, Bill Branagan; and his sisters-in-law, Gertrude Woods and Jeanne Chulbicki.

Bill is survived by his sister, Virginia Watts-Smith and her husband, Ralph; his stepdaughters, Kim Tomosky and her husband, Chris, and Kelly Kinsinger and her husband, Jerry; his grandson, Noah Sassman; his brothers-in-law, Gene Branagan and his wife, Nancy, and Tommy Branagan; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friends from Harrah's Atlantic City—Edward, Lisa, Ron, Chris, Bill, Sterling, and many others. A special thank you is extended to his dear friend Zack and his family, as well as all of Bill's FDNY brothers who remained in touch with him throughout the years.

Bill was a graduate of Far Rockaway High School and he went on to graduate from Fort Skylar Military Academy Maritime College. He proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Naval Reserve. Bill dedicated 30 years of service to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), retiring with the rank of Captain. He was also a proud first responder during the events of September 11, 2001.

Following his retirement from the FDNY, Bill and Laurena spent the last 22 years enjoying life together in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Bill enjoyed a good Scotch and a cigar with friends, relaxing in his backyard, and savoring a great Italian meal. He loved visiting Harrah's to play poker. He will be remembered for his quiet and kind demeanor, and as a fierce patriotic guy, with a love of God and Country. Bill will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

His life leaves behind a lasting legacy of service, dedication, and sacrifice.
