Wayne George Hambleton, 90, of Georgetown, Delaware, formerly of Elkton, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, October 26, 2026.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, on November 14, 1935, Wayne was the son of the late George and Harriet Hambleton. He worked in his family’s printing business, Paragon Press in Wilmington, for 20 years before selling the business and following his lifelong love of animals. He opened Captain Quarters for Pets in Elkton, where he spent the rest of his working years caring for animals and getting to know the people who loved them.

Wayne faced many challenges throughout his life, but he never lost his positive outlook. His strength and ability to keep moving forward will stay with those who knew him. He had a special place in his heart for dogs and found happiness in the company of family and animals. Fishing trips on the Delaware Bay with his family were among his treasured memories. In his younger years, he also enjoyed the excitement of drag racing, participating in the sport during the 1950s.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Holly Carhart; and his sister, Winnie Hambleton.

He is survived by his son, Alex Hambleton, and Alex’s wife, Wendy; his five grandchildren, Alexa Hambleton, Amanda Piper, Sarah Hambleton, Ben Carhart, and Kaity Carhart; and extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, DE 19966. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m.

A private graveside service will be held at Gracelawn Memorial Park in New Castle, Delaware, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Wayne’s memory may be made to Humane Animal Partners of Delaware, 18675 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971, in honor of his lifelong love of animals.
