Thomas George Harden, age 94, of Lewes, DE, formerly of Olney, MD, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, DE.

Tom was born in Hyndman, PA, on November 28, 1931, the son of the late George Edward Harden and Mary Marie (Croft) Harden. He enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with C&P Telephone and Verizon, working in various capacities before retiring after 32 years of dedicated service as a supervisor.

Of all the blessings in Tom’s long and meaningful life, none was greater than the love he shared with his wife and best friend, Gwen Delores (Smith) Harden. Tom and Gwen were married for nearly 76 years, building a beautiful life together filled with love, family, faith, adventure, and countless memories. Their enduring devotion to one another was an inspiration to all who knew them. Through nearly eight decades together, they remained each other’s greatest companion and source of strength. Tom’s love for Gwen was evident in the way he spoke of her and in the life they shared, and Gwen will forever cherish his voice, his humor, his kindness, and the many years they spent side by side.

Tom was a man of deep faith and was a current member of Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach, DE. He was also a former member of The Lutheran Church of St. Andrew in Silver Spring, MD, and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Olney, MD. His faith was an important part of his life, and he found joy in worship and fellowship with his church families. Tom loved to sing, and his voice was especially beloved by Gwen.

A true outdoorsman, Tom found great joy in camping, traveling, gardening, crabbing, and, most of all, fishing. Some of his happiest memories were made on the water, sharing his love of fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was a talented and resourceful man who could fix nearly anything. Tom also enjoyed woodworking and took great pride in creating beautiful pieces of furniture with his own hands.

Tom treasured his family and loved nothing more than spending time with those he loved. Whether fishing with his grandchildren, enjoying the outdoors, working on a project, or simply sharing everyday life with Gwen, he found happiness in the simple moments that became lasting memories.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his daughter, Callista Freedman; his brother, Walter Harden; and his three sisters, Dorothy Connor, Betty See, and Alice Jones.

In addition to his beloved wife, Gwen, Tom is survived by his three children, Pamela Piontek and her husband, Ed, of Sandy Spring, MD; Gale Wolf and her husband, Chuck, of Frederick, MD; and David Harden and his wife, Angie, of Alexandria, VA; nine grandchildren, Edward Piontek, Ryan Wolf, Matthew Wolf and his wife, Brittany, Ben Wolf and his wife, Christina, Christopher Freedman, Madison Harden-Stein and her husband, Josh, Bradley Harden, Ella Rose Harden, and Adelae Harden; and three great-grandchildren, Morgan Wolf, Eleanor Wolf, and Austin Wolf.

Tom will be remembered as a devoted husband whose greatest joy was the life he built alongside Gwen. Their nearly 76 years of marriage were a testament to a love that endured through every season of life. He was also a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, a man of faith, a gifted craftsman, and an outdoorsman who knew how to appreciate life’s simple pleasures. His love, his stories, his singing voice, and the memories he created with his family will remain in their hearts forever.

A visitation will be held from 10:00–11:00 AM on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 20276 Bay Vista Rd., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971, where a funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM. A private graveside service will be held at Madley Cemetery in Buffalo Mills, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Tom’s name to the Lutheran Church of Our Savior at the above address.
