Samuel David Harrell, of Dagsboro, Delaware, passed away peacefully at home on July 20, 2026. He was born on November 14, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Samuel Clifton Harrell and Olive C. Tingle Murray.

Sam proudly served his country in both the Delaware National Guard and the United States Air Force.

Sam lived a full and accomplished life. He retired as a Captain with the Delaware State Police and later became a successful local businessman, owning Tingle’s Package Store and Harrell’s Jewelers in Millsboro. He was also a commercial fisherman operating out of the harbor in West Ocean City, often with his trusty sidekick, Callie, by his side.

He is survived by his loving wife, Debby Harrell; his two sisters, Joye Sammons of Dagsboro, Delaware, and Peggy West and her husband, Eugene, of Georgetown, Delaware; his stepson, Mike Birmingham and his wife, Kelly, of Dagsboro; and his stepdaughter, Chrissy Kashuba and her husband, Brendan, of Ocean City, Maryland. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews and extended family.

Above all, Sam was the incredibly proud “Poppy Sam” to his pride and joy—his grandchildren, Devin, Marley, Lorelei, Sully, Alex, Jaxson, Wyatt, New and Kallie. They brought tremendous happiness to his life, and the love and memories they shared with him will always be treasured.

One of Sam’s greatest joys was playing softball. It remained one of his absolute favorite things throughout his life, and he continued playing until retiring from the game in 2025. Just as meaningful as the game itself were the lasting friendships he formed along the way.

Sam will be remembered as a man who served proudly, worked hard and treasured his family above everything—leaving behind a life well lived and a legacy his family will always carry with pride.
