Robert Mahon, 76, an American conceptual portrait photographer, artist, and business executive, died October 15, 2026.
Born December 28, 1949, in Wilmington, Delaware, Mr. Mahon began working professionally as a photographer in 1978, creating portraits of prominent poets including John Ashbery, John Giorno, Paul Zweig, and Denise Levertov. Over the course of his career, he became known for his exploration of chance and experimental processes in photography, allowing each image to emerge through unconventional physical and chemical means rather than traditional controlled methods.
In addition to his artistic career, Mr. Mahon served as Senior Vice President of Korman Industries in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, beginning in 1999.
His landmark 216-image portrait series of composer and writer John Cage, deeply informed by Cage’s own use of chance operations, was the inaugural artwork exhibited in the Director’s Gallery of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1982 and was later acquired in its entirety by the museum. His work was also featured in the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition Big Pictures by Contemporary Photographers (1983), and MoMA holds his works Two Children and Liberty Series in its permanent collection. Additional works reside in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Princeton University Art Museum, among others. He was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.
Mr. Mahon’s major conceptual projects include John Cage: A Portrait Series; Cram, an ambitious experiment in layered negatives; Bathers, a series of 80 images derived from a single inherited negative; the Autopsy Series; Yoga and Trees: Glimpses of Satya Yuga; Merce Cunningham at 88; and a notable collaboration with Pulitzer Prize–winning poet W. D. Snodgrass for the book These Trees Stand, in which Mahon created the 12-image sequence “Snodgrass is walking through the universe.”
He is survived by his spouse of 43 years Carol Joyce of Delaware; his sister Beverly Ann Mahon of Delaware; his nephew, John Robert Pashak Jr. of Hilton Head Island; his nieces, Tabitha Ann Pashak of Delaware and Sky Kinsman of California; his nephew, Aslan Grealis of California; his great-nephew, Clifton A. Rose of Delaware; and his great-nieces Addison E. Pashak of North Carolina and Kimberly O. Downward of Delaware.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clifton T. Mahon, and his mother, Mary V. Mahon, both of Delaware.
Robert Mahon leaves behind a distinguished legacy as an innovative photographer, respected executive, and devoted family member.
Through his lifelong commitment to photography as a conceptual and experimental art form, Robert Mahon leaves behind a body of work that continues to influence contemporary portraiture and remains preserved in major museum collections around the world.
In lieu of flowers , Mr Mahon asked that contributions be sent to his favorite charities St Jude Foundation, American Heart Foundation and The National Parkinson's Foundation.
