Richard James Coulter, 91, of Millsboro, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at the Seaford Center.
Richard was born in Millsboro on November 23, 1934, to the late James H. Coulter and Catherine (Hall) Coulter. A hardworking man with a generous heart, Richard spent most of his life working as a carpenter. He had a gift for building and fixing things, but perhaps his greatest gift was his willingness to use those talents to help others. If someone needed a hand, Richard was the kind of person who would do whatever he could to help.
Richard touched many lives through his years in A.A., where he served as a sponsor to several members. He was always willing to listen without judgment, offer encouragement, and be there for someone who was struggling. His compassion and quiet strength meant a great deal to those who knew him.
Richard found happiness in the simple things in life. He loved to travel, but he didn't have to go far to enjoy himself. Some of his happiest moments were spent simply taking a ride in his truck along the back roads of Sussex County, enjoying the scenery and the freedom of the open road.
Richard will be remembered for his kind heart, helping hands, listening ear, and the many ways he made a difference in the lives of others. He leaves behind memories that will be cherished by his family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pauline Coulter, and his brothers, Robert, Vincent, and Sonny.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Grace Baxter and her husband, Michael; his loving companion of 17 years, Juanita Morch; his grandchildren, Brian Sockriter and Scott Sockriter; and his great-grandchildren, Briana Sockriter and Scott Sockriter, Jr.
He is also survived by his two stepdaughters, Kelli Garbutt and her husband, Allen, and Kandi Wright; his step-grandchildren, Brandi Garbutt, Matthew Garbutt, Colby Garbutt, and Austin Wright; his brother-in-law, Calvin Ward; and several nieces and nephews.
Though Richard is no longer with us, the kindness he showed, the people he helped, and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2026, at Millsboro Cemetery.
