Michael Joseph Barnes, 79, of Millsboro, Delaware, passed away on August 26, 2026.

Michael was born on December 29, 1946, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Michael and Theresa Barnes. An only child, he was especially close to his dear cousins, who remained an important part of his life.

Michael is survived by his wife, Marcy Maxwell; his sons, Jon Barnes and his partner, Kimberly, and Daniel Barnes and his wife, Meagan; his beloved grandchildren, Xavier and Arabella; and his cousins, Austin Alvarez and his wife, Carol, and Joyce Rachel and her husband, Michael.

Michael attended St. Mary’s Grammar School and St. Mary’s High School in Elizabeth. He went on to graduate from Villanova University, where he was a member of the Naval ROTC and played on the freshman basketball team. He later earned his MBA from Widener University, as well as the professional designations of Certified Public Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor.

Michael proudly served his country in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of Commander. During the Vietnam era, he taught sailors to fly drones, among his many other duties. Over the course of his 28 years in the Navy Reserve, the assignment he enjoyed most was his work with the Naval Investigative Service, now known as the NCIS.

Michael built a distinguished career as an accountant and auditor. He spent the final 29 years of his career with Novartis Pharmaceuticals, retiring as Associate Director of International Audit. His work took him around the world, giving him the opportunity to experience different countries and help employees improve the efficiency of their operations. Michael brought such a positive, constructive approach to his work that branches specifically requested him for their audits.

A curious and caring man, Michael approached everything he did with thoughtfulness and purpose. An avid reader, he never stopped learning and remained genuinely interested in the world and the people around him.

Nothing brought Michael more joy than spending time with his sons, Jon and Daniel. He often spoke fondly of the wonderful trip they took together to Ireland. In recent years, he treasured their weekly telephone calls.

Michael and Marcy loved traveling throughout the United States and around the world, especially by cruise ship. Their travels were second only to the happiness they found at home together, surrounded by the many cherished friends they made over the past 12 years.

Michael was also a dedicated and active member of his community. Through the Big Brothers program, he generously offered his time, guidance, encouragement, and friendship to others.

In retirement, he became an energetic participant in the Independence community, serving on the Activities Committee and as chair of the Welcome Committee. He was also a member of the Veterans Club, the bicycle club and the billiards team.

Above all, Michael will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend—a curious, caring, and truly good man whose warmth and positive spirit touched everyone who knew him.

A memorial gathering celebrating Michael’s life will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the Independence Clubhouse, 23767 Samuel Adams Circle, Millsboro, Delaware.
