Meri Jo Montague, retired nurse

After a life of service, grace, and love, Meri Jo Montague, passed away peacefully at home on July 20, 2025 at the age of 78. Jo was born at Milford Memorial Hospital and grew up in Dagsboro, where she resided most of her life.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Karen Montague; brother Hugh Montague and wife Jo Ann; nieces Lisa Long Terranova and husband Mike; Pamela Montague and son Clayton Peters; nephew Scott Long; sister in law Sharon Montague and close cousins, friends and family. She was predeceased by parents Albert and Phoebe Montague; twin sister Elizabeth; sister Rae Long and husband Mack; and brothers Kevin and Jay Montague.

After graduating from John M. Clayton High School and earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Delaware, Jo embarked on a career teaching second grade at John M. Clayton Elementary School until 1970. She incorporated her artistic talents and love for the arts in her classroom. She continued teaching elementary students at John Eager Howard School in Coral Hills, MD. After returning to Delaware, Jo attended Peninsula General Hospital School of Nursing and Salisbury State College where she earned a master's degree in nursing.

While employed at Stockley Center for fifteen years, Jo was a dedicated nurse and advocate for adults with intellectual disabilities. The need for advocacy for infants and children led her to a final career prior to retiring from the State of Delaware. She began working for DHSS at Child Development Watch, where she assessed developmental milestones for infants and toddlers. She loved working with parents, children, and the CDW staff.

Jo was a past member of the Millsboro Kiwanis, a volunteer for Read Aloud Delaware and The Boys and Girls Club of Dagsboro. After her retirement, Jo taught CPR certification classes and instructed seniors in the community about diabetes prevention and management. She was also a member of the Roxana Cheer Center and enjoyed the social activities provided.

Jo spent her life dedicated to service and gave endlessly, never seeking praise and only hoping to make life better for others. She loved the Lord and was an active parishioner at Bethel United Methodist Church for over 65 years. She taught Vacation Bible School, served on several committees and shared many lifelong friendships through her church. Memories of her eloquence, generous nature and her ability to choose a golden path will forever remain in our hearts.

The family wishes to express gratitude to friends, extended family, VITAS Hospice and Always Best Care for the compassionate care, prayers and support provided at the end of Jo's life.

A celebration of Jo's life will be held at the Bethel Center (107 Clayton Street, Dagsboro) on Sunday, August 17, 2025 at 11:30 AM.
