Lewis W. Smith, 83, of Frankford, Delaware, formerly of Forest Hill, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Lewis was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on August 19, 1943, to the late Lewis D. Smith and Catharine (Weiser) Smith. He was a graduate of Parkville Senior High School in Parkville, Maryland.
Lewis proudly dedicated more than 30 years of his life to serving his country in the Maryland Air National Guard. He retired as a Master Sergeant after a distinguished career as a flight engineer and flight instructor on the C-130. His love of aviation continued throughout his life, and following his military service, Lewis was a Captain with Lockheed Martin Corporate Aircraft from 1986 until 2004.
A man of many passions, Lewis was a devoted Baltimore football fan and enjoyed cheering on his team. He had a particular love for cars, especially Corvettes, and took great pride in restoring them. He enjoyed the process of bringing an old car back to life and appreciated the beauty and character in every detail.
Lewis also shared a very special bond with his beloved canine companion, Bailey. The two were rarely apart and brought one another great comfort and companionship. Bailey was a cherished part of Lewis's life and was always by his side.
Lewis will be remembered as a proud veteran, a talented pilot, a devoted father and grandfather, and a man who found joy in the things he loved. Most of all, he will be remembered for the love he had for his family and the memories he created with them throughout his life.
In addition to his parents, Lewis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet Smith.
He leaves behind his three children, Kerry Meadows and her husband, Kevin, of Powder Springs, GA; Tracey Hankins and her husband, Jeffrey, of Bel Air, MD; and Lewis “Michael” Smith of Abington, MD; and his granddaughter, Regan Hankins.
He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Lloyd and her husband, Ernie, of Timonium, MD, and his niece, Kate Mellinger of Timonium, MD.
Lewis leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a legacy of service, and a family who loved him dearly. Though he will be deeply missed, the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the memories he created will remain with his family and loved ones forever.
A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2026, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE 19966.
