John “Jack” D. Watkins, age 83, of Dagsboro, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at his home with his beloved wife by his side.

Born on November 22, 1942, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, Jack was the son of the late Robert Watkins and the late Ruth Maxine (Cartwright) Huber. He pursued his passion for education by earning his undergraduate degree from Fairmont State College in West Virginia and later obtaining his master’s degree from Wilmington College.

Jack dedicated his life to serving others through education. He began his teaching career at Van Devender Junior High School in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where he spent ten years shaping young minds and encouraging student success. In 1974, he and his family relocated to Delaware, where he began a remarkable 30-year career with Indian River High School. As a physical education teacher, guidance counselor, and coach, Jack became a respected educator, mentor, and friend to generations of students.

Whether in the classroom, on the playing field, or in his office, Jack had a gift for connecting with people. He believed in the potential of every student and took pride in helping young people discover their strengths, overcome challenges, and pursue their goals. His influence extended far beyond academics and athletics, leaving an enduring mark on countless lives throughout the community.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Jack loved nearly every sport, whether he was participating, coaching, or cheering from the sidelines. A proud Pennsylvania native, he remained a devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Pittsburgh Penguins throughout his life. He also cherished time spent outdoors, enjoying fishing and hunting, and found peace and relaxation in playing his guitar. Some of his happiest moments were those spent surrounded by family, friends, and the activities he loved most.

Above all, Jack was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and provider. His family was the center of his world, and he took great pride in their accomplishments and happiness. He will be remembered for his steady presence, strong work ethic, generous spirit, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Watkins, and his half-brother, Gary Watkins.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories through his wife of 57 years, Saundra J. (Dennis) Watkins; his children, Eric Watkins and his wife, Tammy, of Millsboro, Delaware, Heather McCabe and her husband, George, of Selbyville, Delaware, Shawn Watkins and his wife, Kasey, of Huntington Beach, California, and Michael Bailey and his wife, Missy, of Princeton, West Virginia; his nine grandchildren, Connor Watkins, and his wife Gabriella, Luke McCabe, Brynn McCabe, Owen Watkins, Zoey Watkins, Isla Watkins, Vera Watkins, Steve Bailey, and his wife Melissa, and Aaron Bailey, and his wife Santana; his five great-grandchildren, Colton Watkins, Wyatt Watkins, Jackson Bailey, Maris Bailey, and Millie Bailey; and his half-brother, William Huber, of Stafford, Virginia.

Jack’s life was defined by service, compassion, integrity, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others. The lessons he taught, the encouragement he offered, and the relationships he built will continue to be felt for generations to come.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on August 22, 2026 at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View, DE, 19970. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am and service will begin at 12:00 pm.
