John “Jack” Roman Cherba, Sr., age 79, of Selbyville, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE.
Jack was born in Hazleton, PA, on May 11, 1947, to the late Michael Cherba and the late Anna (Kostic) Cherba. He proudly served his country with the 173rd Airborne Brigade of the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
Following his military service, Jack went on to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from American University. He dedicated much of his life to serving others and his community as a longtime detective with the Prince George’s County Police Department, where he worked in several divisions throughout his career.
Those who knew Jack will remember him most for his kind heart and gentle spirit. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and a man who worked hard to provide for the family he loved so dearly. Jack found joy in the simple things in life and, above all, treasured the time he spent with his family. His quiet strength, kindness, and caring nature touched the lives of many, and the love he gave will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his beloved son, John Roman Cherba, Jr.; his brother, Michael Cherba; and his sister, Geraldine Calabrese.
Jack leaves behind his loving wife of 41 years, Brenda L. (Mortfeld) Cherba, who was by his side throughout their many years together; his son, Neal Charles Cherba; and five cherished grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Connor, Michael, Avery, and Andrew. He is also survived by his brother, Donald Cherba; his sister, Jeannette Keiper; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jack will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever remain a part of the lives of those who loved him. His family will carry with them the many years of love, laughter, memories, and moments they shared, grateful for the gift of having had him in their lives.
A service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE 19966.
