John "Jack" M. Carney, 77

John "Jack" M. Carney, age 77, of Millsboro, Delaware, and longtime resident of Elkton, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 1, 1947, Jack was the son of the late John and Catherine Carney. He earned his bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg University and went on to receive his master's from Glassboro College. Jack devoted over 35 years to public education as a teacher and guidance counselor at William Penn High School in the Colonial School District, where he also made a lasting impact as a mentor to countless students.

Jack had an avid love of sports. He was a standout basketball player at Bishop Egan High School and continued to play in college at Bloomsburg, where he was a leading scorer. Through the years, Jack coached multiple youth sports teams and led the William Penn girls basketball team to a state championship. His passion for sports continued as "Grandpop" proudly cheered on his grandchildren from the sidelines.

Jack found joy in life's simple pleasures—sunny days at the beach in Bethany, winter months enjoying warm weather and friends in Naples, quiet mornings on the porch with his coffee and crossword puzzles, and cheering on his beloved Philadelphia sports teams. Jack's greatest pride and joy was his family and spending time with them brought him much happiness. Jack was known for his clever sense of humor, comforting hugs, and devotion to our family.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; his daughters Beth Arigo (Andy) of Sanford, FL, Stacy Carney of Wilmington, DE, and Kim Gillis (Brad) of Salisbury, MD; his stepdaughter Alex Arthur (Paul) of Middletown, DE, and stepson Josh Wiggins of Millsboro, DE. Jack also leaves behind eleven grandchildren—Emma, Lauren, Audrey, Jackson, Beau, Madi, Ashton, Connor, Jackson, Ferris, and Keating—each of whom held a special place in his heart.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna, and his stepson, Chris Wiggins.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated team at Accent Care Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Seasonsfoundation.org in Jack's honor.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025 at Melson's Funeral Home, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, DE. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am with the service to follow at 12:00 pm.
