Obituary

Gary F. Hazel, Sr., age 70, of Frankford, Delaware, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Delaware, surrounded by the love and memories of those who meant so much to him.

Gary was born on July 17, 1956, in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, to Frank D. Hazel, Jr. and Ada J. (Collins) Hazel. He was a proud graduate of Indian River High School, Class of 1974.

Gary dedicated 48 years of his life to the Fenwick Inn, beginning his career during the hotel’s construction and continuing his service until his retirement in 2023 as chief engineer. Throughout those years, he became much more than a valued employee. He formed lasting friendships with coworkers who became an important part of his life. His years of dedication, hard work, and camaraderie were a testament to the loyalty and commitment that defined him.

To know Gary was to know someone who loved life and knew how to make the most of every moment. He was truly the life of the party, bringing laughter, good times, and a larger-than-life spirit wherever he went. Gary was actively involved in many social organizations, including the East Sussex Moose Lodge #2542 in Roxana, Delaware, and the Elks Lodge #2645 in Ocean City, Maryland. He was also a member of the Moose Horseshoe League and a proud member of the “Naked Crabbers.” These friendships and shared adventures brought him great joy throughout his life.

A passionate sports fan, Gary loved cheering on the Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles, and Washington Capitals. He also enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia, finding pleasure in the memories and stories behind each treasured piece. When he wasn’t enjoying sports or spending time with friends, some of his happiest moments were spent riding his Harley along the quiet backroads of Sussex County, enjoying the freedom of the open road.

Above all, Gary cherished his family and the friendships he built along the way. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose presence made life a little brighter for those around him. His heart also held a special place for his beloved cats, Cotton and Tyler, who brought him comfort and companionship.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Frank D. Hazel, Jr., and his stepson, Michael B. Cella.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Donna (Cantrell) Cella; his son, Gary F. Hazel, Jr., and his companion, Brittnae Johnson; his cherished grandson, Jared D. Hazel; his mother, Ada (Collins) Hazel Wightman; his sister, Jane Hazel Oakley, and her husband, Jim; his stepson, John Paul Cella; and many devoted friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with him.

Gary’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View, Delaware 19970. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until noon, with a funeral service beginning at noon. Interment will be private for the family at Roxana Cemetery.

Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at the East Sussex Moose Lodge, 35993 Zion Church Road, Frankford, Delaware, to continue celebrating Gary’s life, sharing stories, remembering good times, and honoring the friendships and memories that meant so much to him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to one of the organizations Gary supported: Wounded Warrior Project at www.Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org, or the Blood Bank of Delmarva at www.delmarvablood.org.

Gary leaves behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, friendships, and love. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the joy he brought to so many will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace, forever riding the open roads he loved.
