Dr. James Nicholas Kalonturos

Dr. James Nicholas Kalonturos passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 24, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on April 9, 1952, in Washington, D.C., he dedicated his life to the service of others through his distinguished healthcare career, entrepreneurial spirit, and compassionate care for countless patients.

Dr. Kalonturos graduated from the University of Maryland in 1974 before continuing his education at the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois, where he earned his degree in chiropractic medicine. Following his graduation, he worked with several healthcare practices throughout Maryland and Georgia, where he developed both his clinical expertise and a reputation for exceptional patient care.

Driven by a vision to build his own practice, Dr. Kalonturos opened his first office in Lanham, Maryland. Soon afterward, he welcomed his brother, Dr. George Kalonturos, into the practice. Their dedication and success led to the expansion of additional offices in Fair Oaks, Virginia; Baltimore, Maryland; and Wilmington, Delaware. Over the course of his career, he touched the lives of thousands of patients, earning their trust through his knowledge, compassion, and unwavering commitment to their well-being.

Among his many professional accomplishments, Dr. Kalonturos served as the on-call doctor for Cellar Door Productions, one of the nation's leading concert promotion companies. Through this role, he had the unique opportunity to provide care for numerous renowned musical artists, including Bob Seger, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, and many others. He treasured the memorable experiences and friendships that came from this distinctive chapter of his career.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Kalonturos was an avid runner and reader. He was known for reading several books at a time and maintained a lifelong passion for learning and expanding his knowledge. After many years of serving patients throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, he retired to Delaware, where he enjoyed a quieter pace of life while remaining connected to family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas Kalonturos; his mother, Aphrodite Kalonturos; and his brother-in-law, Anthony Rellos.

He is survived by his brother, Dr. George Kalonturos; his sisters, Melissa Gasparis and her husband George, and Christina Keith and her husband Curtis. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews—Toni Nicole Can and her husband Matt, Dr. Christopher Gasparis, Nikolas Keith, Zachary Keith, and Zoe Keith—as well as his cherished grandnieces, Madeleine and Evalina Can.

He will be deeply missed by his extended family and countless friends who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.

Dr. Kalonturos will be remembered for his generosity, dedication to his profession, love of family, and the profound impact he made on the lives of those he served. His legacy lives on in the countless patients he helped heal, the family he loved, and the many lives he touched along the way.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, 8805 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, Maryland. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place immediately following the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Dagsboro, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Ocean City, Maryland.
