Despina Kaneles, a longtime resident of the Bethany Beach area, passed away on April 3, 2026, after a brave battle fighting cancer.

Born on February 16, 1948, in Baltimore, Maryland, Despina was the daughter of the late Pericles T. Kaneles and Catherine Lagakos Kaneles. She was known for her sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor.

Despina began her real estate career in Washington, D.C. She later found her true calling in new construction sales at Sea Colony, where she became a truly exceptional realtor. She was deeply admired and truly loved by her clients, many of whom became lifelong friends. She built her career specializing in Sea Colony, where her knowledge, instinct, and passion made her a trusted expert in the community.

She began her work with the developer of Sea Colony, Carl M. Freeman, forming many lasting friendships along the way. She later continued her success as a valued member of the Leslie Kopp Group, where she remained dedicated to the community she knew and loved so well, and was always grateful for the support and friendship of Leslie and her colleagues.

Despina was quirky in the best way, and everyone who knew her has a favorite "Despina story." She had exceptional taste and loved to shop, always searching for the perfect gift for someone she cared about. She was incredibly thoughtful. It was simply part of who she was.

Before real estate, Despina started her sales career selling shoes at Nordstrom. There were plenty of outrageous and entertaining stories from those days. Anyone who knew her can imagine that while she sold a lot of shoes, the stockroom may have been a bit of a different story.

She loved art, culture, and travel. Despina and her husband, Ed Jones, shared many wonderful travel adventures together. After his passing in 2012, she continued to travel with her dear friend Ellen and other close friends, enjoying many memorable trips filled with laughter. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Andy (Cathy) Jones and Kaitlyn Jones.

Despina was an only child, but she created deep, sibling-like bonds with her cousins, Penelope L. Constantinidi (Andrei) and Dean A. Theodos (Mary Ann), as well as numerous other cousins. She was preceded in death by her cherished parents.

Her dear friends Ellen Blocher-Winkler and Carolyn Heit-Closson were truly extraordinary in their care and devotion, standing by her side throughout her illness with unwavering love and support. They were like family, along with many friends including Sarah, Anna (goddaughter), Ann, Alex, Rodney.

She was also lovingly known as "Auntie D" to many of her friends' dogs, always making sure they had a special toy or treat waiting for them. Her four-legged friends will miss her, too.

Above all, Despina was devoted to her family and friends. She loved deeply and generously, always putting others first. Her beloved cats…Tugs, Zee, and Tige…brought her endless joy and were cherished beyond measure. She will be remembered for her warmth, her generosity, her sense of humor, her unforgettable laugh, and the way she was always unapologetically herself.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Truly one of a kind.
